Embracing Musical Diversity and the Power of Cultural Exchange
In a world that often seeks to divide and categorize, Otis Selimane stands as a beacon of unity, using his music as a bridge between cultures. As a Mozambican artist based in Brazil, Otis has dedicated his life to exploring the rich tapestry of global sounds, weaving together the musical traditions of his homeland with the vibrant rhythms of the African diaspora.
Otis’ journey is one of discovery, resilience, and a deep reverence for the transformative power of art. Born in Mozambique, he was initially set on a path towards engineering, following in the footsteps of his father’s dreams. However, the allure of music proved too strong to ignore, and Otis found himself drawn to the stage, captivated by the energy and connection that performance ignited within him.
As Otis navigated the crossroads between his family’s expectations and his own artistic passions, he made the bold decision to pursue his musical dreams, eventually finding his way to Brazil. It was in this vibrant, culturally diverse country that Otis truly blossomed, immersing himself in the rich tapestry of Brazilian music and its deep roots in African heritage.
Worldmusic: A Universal Language
Otis’ music defies easy categorization, embracing the concept of “worldmusic” as a means of transcending borders and connecting people from all walks of life. He believes that music is a universal language, a powerful tool for bridging cultural divides and allowing each listener to find a piece of their own identity within the melodies and rhythms.
As Otis explains, “I never try to naturally reproduce music that has a character of emulating some kind of originality in the sense of ‘this is the roots of x.’ Instead, I seek to know the maximum, to be immersed in these traditional or originating references, so that I can use that as a creative tool to make the music that I make.”
Otis’ music is a tapestry of influences, seamlessly blending the traditional sounds of Mozambique with the vibrant rhythms of Brazil and the global reach of jazz, samba, and Afro-Brazilian traditions.
He sees his role as an artist not just to entertain, but to educate and foster a deeper understanding of the diverse cultural landscapes that have shaped his own musical identity.
By embracing the concept of worldmusic, Otis creates a space where listeners can connect with their own cultural roots while also discovering the richness of other musical traditions.
Renascimento: A Journey of Rediscovery
Otis’ latest project, “Renascimento” (Rebirth), marks a significant milestone in his artistic journey. This album represents a return to his roots, a deep dive into the sonic and cultural heritage of Mozambique, while also incorporating the musical influences he has gathered during his time in Brazil.
The creation of “Renascimento” has been a deliberate and thoughtful process, with Otis determined to capture the essence of his homeland while also acknowledging the transformative experiences he has had as a Mozambican artist living in the diaspora. By recording parts of the album in both Mozambique and Brazil, Otis seeks to create a sonic tapestry that reflects the duality of his identity and the interconnectedness of the cultures that have shaped him.
As Otis explains, “In ‘Renascimento,’ I want to turn to the origins, both in terms of sound, rhythm, and identity from Mozambique, and inevitably from other parts of Africa, as I mentioned before, this cauldron is very vast. But I have a great desire in this work that is still being built, albeit slowly but consistently, to do some of this production here in Mozambique, articulating this possibility of recording part of this album here with Mozambican artists, and another part in Brazil, and finalizing it in Brazil, because I really want it to have this sound mixture, you know?”
Bridging the Cultural Divide
Otis’ commitment to cultural exchange extends far beyond his music. He has become a passionate advocate for strengthening the ties between Brazil and the African continent, particularly his homeland of Mozambique. Through workshops, lectures, and collaborative artistic projects, Otis has dedicated himself to dismantling the misconceptions and stereotypes that often plague the perceptions of Africa in the Brazilian consciousness.
As Otis observes, there are two distinct dimensions of Africa that Brazilians engage with: the “Africa of memory,” rooted in the cultural and spiritual practices brought by enslaved Africans, and the “real Africa,” the contemporary, geographically-grounded continent with its own unique challenges and aspirations. Otis recognizes the importance of bridging this divide, encouraging Brazilians to experience Africa firsthand and to embrace the diversity and dynamism of the continent beyond the limited, often romanticized, narratives.
Otis has been actively involved in organizing cultural exchange programs, bringing artists from various African countries to collaborate with their Brazilian counterparts.
He has also worked with governmental institutions in Brazil to facilitate deeper connections and understanding between the two regions, challenging the persistent notion of Africa as a distant, exotic land.
Through his own artistic endeavors and educational initiatives, Otis aims to empower both Africans and Brazilians to celebrate their shared histories and forge new pathways of cultural exchange.
The Power of Music and Ancestral Roots
At the heart of Otis’ artistic vision lies a deep reverence for the transformative power of music and its ability to connect people across cultural boundaries. He believes that music is not just a form of entertainment, but a vessel for preserving and transmitting cultural heritage, a means of honoring the ancestral roots that have shaped the African diaspora.
Otis’ music is imbued with a sense of purpose, a desire to celebrate the richness of Mozambican and broader African musical traditions while also acknowledging the complex realities of the modern world. He sees his role as an artist not just to entertain, but to educate and foster a deeper understanding of the diverse cultural landscapes that have shaped his own musical identity.
As Otis reflects, “I have a great desire in this work that is still being built, albeit slowly but consistently, to do some of this production here in Mozambique, articulating this possibility of recording part of this album here with Mozambican artists, and another part in Brazil, and finalizing it in Brazil, because I really want it to have this sound mixture, you know?”
